The Manawahe Eco Trust is a Charitable Trust formed by the Manawahe residents to oversee the management of the wonderful resource that is the almost continuous corridor of bush from Lake Rotoma to the sea at Matata.
They are building on the early work that Environment Bay of Plenty helped out with in designing a pest management strategy for the Corridor.
There are now over 1000 ha of native bush protected by covenants and bait stations targeting possum and rats. M.E.T.'s aim is to extend this protection from the lakes to the sea. The bush is given relief from browsing animals, bird life thrives and opportunity is given to invertebrates, lizards, frogs etc to re-establish themselves.
While their main aim is protection, they also want others to be able to experience for themselves the wonder of this bush and aim to provide educational and recreational opportunities through activities and walking tracks.
With support from the Department of Conservation, Transpower Landcare Trust and Environment Bay of Plenty, M.E.T. continues with their restoration and pest control projects and is in the process of appointing a Development Coordinator to ensure the sustainability of the Trust.
