Kawerau's geothermal field comprises hot springs, steaming vents and deep bores ranging from 250 - 315 degrees Celsius. It is an intrinsic part of the district's unique character. Geothermal systems are a clean, abundant and reliable source of renewable energy.
The Kawerau field is one of New Zealand's largest. As well as power generation, it supplies process steam for the industrial wood-processing site shared by Norske Skog Tasman, Asaleo Care, Oji Fibre Solutions, Sequal Lumber and CHH Wood Products. The steam is used for drying wood and producing and drying paper and tissue products.
