The Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre are Kawerau's free, heated pool complex, in the middle of Kawerau, opposite the Kawerau isite. There is a 30m pool divided by a bulkhead into a 25m pool and a 5m pool, and two smaller pools for children. All pools have some shade.
The temperature of these pools varies during the year. During the winter season, which usually starts at the end of the first school term and finishes at the end of the third school term, the temperature ranges between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius - ideal for relaxing, but not recommended for active swimming. Depending on climatic conditions pool temperature range from 28 to 31 degrees Celsius in summer.
The complex also boasts a spa pool that measures 8m x 10m, with a depth of 1.1m. It is designed for relaxation. The spa, entered via steps with supporting handrails, has seats and controllable water jets around the perimeter and a waterfall that cascades onto users' shoulders for maximum relief for aching muscles. A hoist is available to enable the disabled or frail to enjoy the water. Temperatures range from 37 to 40 degrees in winter, with summer temperatures adjusted as required.
There is a Splash Pad and a Jumping Pillow for children to enjoy.
The whole complex is surrounded by large recreation and play areas where barbecue and picnic tables are available for families and larger groups.
